CLERMONT, Fla. – After dropping its first two games of the season, the Carleton College softball team bounced back with a pair of victories on Wednesday night. The Knights posted a 7-2 triumph over Trinity Christian College then capped the evening with an 8-0 win over Gallaudet University as pitchers Claire Willeck (So./ Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and Jenny Forster (Jr./Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) combined on a no-hitter, the third in team history.
The opener was knotted at 1-1 when Willeck doubled to open the bottom of the fourth. She later scored on a single by Keelin Davis (Fy./Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville), giving the Knights the lead for good. Carleton tacked on another run the fifth via a Jenny Ramey (Jr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) triple and sacrifice fly off the bat of Micaela LaRose (So./Waconia, Minn./Holy Family).
The Knights padded their advantage with four runs thanks to five consecutive in the sixth frame. That provided more than enough run support for LaRose, who evened her record at 1-1 on the season. She went the distance, allowing one earned run on six hits.
The offense stayed hot in the evening’s second contest, pounding out 12 hits and scoring at least once in every inning. However, it was the mound work of Willeck and Forster that became the storyline.
The Bison had runners aboard in each of the front three innings, but Willeck (1-0) was able to work out of trouble every time. Forster emerged from the bullpen and added a pair 1-2-3 innings to nail down the Knights’ first no-hitter since assistant coach Caitlyn Cornell achieved the feat on March 25, 2005. (SEE CHART BELOW)
Ramey and Davis both finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate.
Carleton will play a pair of games on Thursday, March 21 as the Knights face D’Youville College (N.Y.) and Western New England University (Mass.).
