Knights Topped Twice on Tuesday

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carleton College softball team absorbed two more losses on Tuesday, dropping an 11-3 decision to Calvin College and a 9-3 result against No. 21 Carthage College.

Carleton never escaped an early deficit in the opener as Calvin plated four runs in the opening frame, including a two-run homer by Nicole Weener, one of four roundtrippers by the victors in the game.

All three Carleton runs were tallied in the fifth inning, highlighted by Brooke McManigal’s (So./Bothell, Wash./Singapore American School) two-run single.

The day’s second game saw the Knights battle the nationally-ranked Lady Reds. Carleton missed a golden opportunity to seize the early advantage, leaving the bases loaded in the opening inning. Carthage plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the second, but the Knights answered with three runs of their own to start the third inning.

Carleton loaded the bases with none out, and Kaitlin Bagley (So./Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) delivered a two-run single. Katrina Harper’s (So./Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights) run-scoring groundout brought home the tying run.

The Lady Reds re-gained the lead with four tallies in the bottom of the stanza, including a two-run homer by Abby Hanson.

After a day away from competition on Wednesday, Carleton will seek its first triumph of the trip when the Knights face the same two teams again on Thursday, March 22.
