ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Knights knew they faced an uphill battle when the schedule called for them to travel to the University of St. Thomas, which is ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Tommies limited Carleton to one hit in each game as they recorded 13-1 and 5-0 victories.
The Tommies proved worthy of their stature as the sixth-best team in the country according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. They jumped all over Carleton starting pitcher Mari Jo Long (Sr./Willmette, Ill./New Trier) for five runs in the first inning and four more in the second.
Meanwhile the Knight’ offense was held to only one hit, a single by Long in the fifth to set up the Carleton run.
The Knights played better in game two as starting pitcher Karen Robinson (Fy./ Bainbridge Island, Wash.) faced the minimum over her front two frames. St. Thomas finally broke through for a pair of runs in the third followed by another in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Hannah Maras (Sr./Madelia, Minn.) notched the Knights lone hit, a single to start the fifth.
Carleton stays on the road for a double dip at St. Benedict tomorrow at 1 p.m.
