Saint Paul, Minn.— After acquiring a third All-Tournament team selection in as many weeks, Carleton sophomore Camille Benson (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) was named as the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.
Benson received the weekly honor after leading the Knights to an impressive 3-1 weekend at the ACM Invitational this past weekend in Decorah, Iowa. Benson anchored the Knight defense throughout the weekend, recording 83 digs, 14 assists and five aces in four matches.
Benson started the weekend with 14 digs in a 3-0 loss to Cornell, but both her and the Knights had even better performances to come. She had 18 digs, three aces and two assists in a 3-0 win over Knox, 28 digs, eight assists and an ace in a 3-1 victory over Lake Forest, and 23 digs, three assists and an ace in a 3-0 victory over Lawrence. Benson currently leads all MIAC participants in digs (290) and digs-per-set (6.74) and she ranks second in service aces (20) thus far in 2013.
Carleton used its strong performance over the weekend to improve to 9-3, as they are one of four conference teams with at least nine wins and three or fewer losses. Benson and the Knights open MIAC play this week with a pair of road matches. Carleton travels to St. Peter to face Gustavus Wednesday, followed by another road match on Friday, when the Knights travel to Minneapolis to face Augsburg. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
