NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College volleyball team wasted little time in picking up its second conference victory of the season. The Knights swept Macalester College 3-0. Karen Halls (Fy./Edina, Minn./Edina) came off the bench to record six kills as she hit a team-best .667. Carleton (12-7, 2-3 MIAC) controlled the match up front, totaling 10 blocks and hitting .260 compared to -.018 for Macalester. The Knights seized the momentum midway through the opening game and cruised by scores of 25-10, 25-17, and 25-13.

Leading 9-7 in the first set, Carleton closed with a 16-3 run including four blocks. It was more of the same in the middle set as the Scots tied the score 13-13 before Jessa Youso’s (Jr./Virginia, Minn./Virginia) block sparked the Knights’ closing 12-4 run. Carleton built the lead early in the final set and was never seriously threatened.

“I thought we played very aggressive and smart tonight,” said Carleton head coach Heidi Jaynes. “Our passing was on and our blocks were big tonight, which gave us a good win. I’m excited for our match on Sunday.”

Jaynes took advantage of the score differential to work several reserves into the contest. This included solid returns for Haley Woodward (So./Edina, Minn./Edina) and Sami Kemper (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake), both of whom have been battling injuries.

Sarah Nielsen (Jr./Altoona, Wis./Altoona) paced the Knights with eight kills. Youso chipped in seven kills followed by six by Halls and five by Kemper.

Alicia Flatt (Fy./Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) and Hannah Folz (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) split the setting duties, accumulating 18 and 10 assists respectively.

Carleton will host Hamline University on Friday, Oct. 7. Knights Online will carry a live video webcast of the 7 p.m. match.
