Blazers Show Knights the Door in MIAC Playoffs... Again

Northfield, Minn. -- For the second straight season, St. Benedict came into West Gym and beat the Carleton College volleyball team in the MIAC Playoffs, as the sixth-seeded Blazer ousted the third-seeded Knights, 3-1.

Individual game scores in favor of the Blazers were 30-24, 30-26, 25-30 and 30-27. Teri Knapper tallied 12 kills, five blocks, six digs and two aces and Emma Jaynes added 12 kills, 20 digs, four blocks and two aces to pace the Blazers (14-12). St. Benedict now advances in the MIAC Playoffs to face second seeded Gustavus Adolphus College on Thurdsay, Nov. 2, in St. Peter at 7 p.m.

Nicole Hjelmgren added 11 kills and 10 blocks and Teresa Nauman and Andrea Millerbernd added 11 kills each. Larua Zwach posted a match-high 40 digs and Beth Hanson recorded 40 assists.

Last season, the Blazers upset the Knights in the conference tournament semifinals, as both teams advanced on to the NCAA Tournament.

Danielle Hargreaves (Sr./Brandon, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) led the Knights (13-11) with 19 kills, 28 digs and three aces. She passed Lizzy Erickson '04 for fourth on Carleton's all-time kills list and ends her career with 972 kills.

Samantha Hendricks (Jr./Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) added 13 kills, five blocks and five digs and Sarah Kunelius (So./Eagan, Minn.) chipped in with 11 kills, six digs and five blocks.

Heather La Chapelle (Jr./Eagan, Minn.) dealt out 50 assists and added seven digs and Laura Barsness (Fy./Lakeville, Minn./North) tallied 29 digs. Heather La Chapelle moved into second on Carleton's all-time assists list with 2,606 assists and heads into her senior year needing only 405 assists to become Carleton's all-time leader in the category.

The match signalled the final collegiate match for Carleton's four seniors: Hargreaves, Vanessa Brown (Lakeville, Minn.), Kelsey Holmes (Brownsburg, Ind.) and Erin Jones (Farmington, Minn.).
