NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton volleyball team got off to a great start in its season opening match against Northwestern College (Minn.), winning the first set 25-16. Unfortunately, the Eagles came back to win three tightly contested sets to snag the match. Kelly Lovett (Jr./Portland, Ore./Lincoln) accumulated a career-high 19 kills and added 11 digs to match her collegiate best.
Lovett obliterated her previous best in a Knights uniform, eclipsing the 11 kills she had against Augsburg College on Sept. 24, 2008. This was the highest four-set kill total by a Carleton player since Samantha Hendricks tallied 24 versus Hamline University on Sept. 26, 2007.
Lovett had six kills as the Knights cruised to the first set victory. The Eagles, though, playing their third match of the young season, were able to re-group, thanks in part to 11 service errors by Carleton.
Kyla Walter (Jr./Aspen, Colo.) and Annie Eckhoff (Sr./Northfield, Minn.) added 10 kills to the Knights’ attack. Eckoff also led the team in blocks with six.
Carleton setter Beth Jarrett (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) contributed 11 digs and dished out a career-best 42 assists, five more than her previous high versus Gustavus on Sept. 13, 2008.
Libero Laura Barsness (Sr./Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) played at an extremely high level, bringing up 28 digs, her best four-set total since the final contest of her rookie season.
The Knights have a pair of matches on Saturday, Sept. 5 at West Gym. They face Buena Vista University at 9:30 a.m. and Martin Luther College at 1:30 p.m. A live video feed (no audio commentary, though) of both matches will be available on Knights Online.
