NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Jessa Youso (Fy./Virginia, Minn.) and Kyla Walter (Jr./Aspen, Colo.) each recorded nine kills to lead a balanced attack as the Carleton College volleyball team swept Macalester College, 3-0, on Wednesday. Youso led all players with a .750 hitting percentage and figured in two blocks. Scores were 25-21, 25-14 and 25-16.
The Knights (13-7, 3-4 MIAC) posted a .232 attack percentage for the match while holding Macalester to a .091 figure. The Scots (6-12, 0-6 MIAC) were led by Majra Mucic’s match-high 11 kills.
After holding a slim margin throughout the first set, Carleton removed any doubt about the outcome of the second set thanks to a 13-1 burst. Youso had three of her kills during that spurt.
Walter then keyed a 6-0 run early in the third set, propelling the Knights to the sweep.
Carleton setter Beth Jarrett (Jr./Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) notched 30 assists and spread the ball around as five different players had at least five kills in the match.
The Scots struggled to stop the middle attack of Youso and Annie Eckhoff (Sr./Northfield, Minn.), who combined for 14 kills with no errors on 20 attempts.
The Knights also accumulated eight service aces, their second-best total for a three-set match this season.
Carleton faces a challenge in its next match as the Knights travel to St. Paul to face the University of St. Thomas. The match will be held at the Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University-St. Paul.
