Knights Go 3-1 at Border Battle

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College volleyball team concluded a weekend full of competition with a 3-1 record at the IIAC-MIAC Border Battle. Senior libero Laura Barsness (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and senior middle hitter Annie Eckhoff (Northfield, Minn.) were selected to the eight-player all-tournament team.

The Knights opened play at St. Olaf's Skoglund Center on Friday with a sweep of Buena Vista University, 25-19, 25-19, and 25-13, followed by a five-set triumph over the University of Dubuque, 19-25, 25-16, 24-26, 25-19, and 15-10.

Carleton was back on the court early Saturday and stumbled a bit against Luther College in absorbing a 3-1 setback. Scores from that match were 24-26, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-20. The Knights played another five-set thriller to close the weekend, prevailing 25-13, 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, and 15-13 over Cornell College.

In this matchup of the fifth through eight-place finishers in the respective conference standings from a year ago, the MIAC definitely got the upper hand by posting a 13-3 overall mark.

"I was happy to see the girls compete this weekend and be on the winning side of both of our five-set matches,” said Carleton head coach Heidi Jaynes. “Annie [Eckhoff] had a great weekend for us, and we are looking forward to playing our next three conference matches at home."

The Knights have a pair of tough matches coming up this week as they will host a pair of nationally ranked opponents. No. 19 College of Saint Benedict visits West Gym on Wed., October 7 and No. 17 Concordia College-Moorhead is on the schedule for Fri., October 9.
