Knights Open ACM Tournament with Split

DECORAH, Iowa. – The Carleton College volleyball team posted a 1-1 record on day one at the ACM Volleyball Invitational. The event, hosted by Luther College, includes a dozen participating colleges who belong to the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) consortium. The Knights dropped their opening match of the tournament to Cornell College (Iowa) in three sets, 25-15, 25-13, and 25-19, before rebounding with a three-set victory over Knox College (Ill.) in the nightcap, 25-13, 25-17, 25-16. 

Playing against defending Midwest Conference Champion and preseason favorite Cornell in the opener, the Knights (7-3) were unable to overcome a slow start in the first set and eventually fell to the Rams (4-1) in straight sets. Caroline Duke (Fy./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) handed out 11 assists to go along with seven digs, while Alicia Flatt (Jr./Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) claimed 14 digs to go along with her 10 assists. Karen Halls (Jr./Edina, Minn./Edina) tallied seven kills to lead the offensive attack.

Carleton quickly responded in their second match of the day, as the team claimed a three-set sweep over Midwest Conference member Knox (1-9). The Knights hit .220 as a team and were led by Halls, who paced the squad with seven kills, six blocks, and four service aces. Duke tallied 13 assists along with seven digs and five kills. Flatt doled out 10 assists, while defensive specialist Camille Benson (So./Savage, Minn./Burnsville) chipped in 18 digs and a trio of aces.

The Knights will close out play at the ACM Invitational with two matches Saturday, first against Lake Forest (Ill.) at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. contest against Lawrence University (Wis.).
