ST. PETER, Minn. – Junior Claire Willeck (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) claimed a team-best seven kills while teammate Rachel Johnson (Sr./Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) added six kills and two blocks but the Carleton College volleyball team dropped its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at Gustavus Adolphus College Wednesday evening.
The Knights (9-4, 0-1 MIAC) fell behind in the first set as the Gusties (6-7, 1-0 MIAC) built a 21-12 lead early in the match. Carleton rallied to pull within five points at 24-19, but Gustavus won the ensuing point to close the set out and take an early advantage in the match.
The Knights built a lead early in the second set but were unable to maintain the momentum as Gustavus eventually broke the set open and en route to a 25-16 set win and 2-0 lead in the match. The Gusties closed the match out with a 25-15 win in the third set.
Carleton served up three aces in the match but were done in by eight errors in the service game. Camille Benson (So./Savage, Minn./Burnsville) claimed a match-best 20 digs, while Alicia Flatt (Jr./Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) added a team-best 11 assists and an ace.
The Knights return to action on Friday evening when they travel to Minneapolis to face Augsburg College at Si Melby Hall. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
