ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College volleyball team continued its winning ways on Saturday, as the team concluded play at the Macalester College Invite with a pair of victories. Carleton opened up day one with a three-set sweep of Northland College, before closing out the weekend with a thrilling five-set win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the afternoon match.
The Knights (6-2) opened the day by dispatching of Northland by scores of 25-16, 25-11, and 25-11. Carleton hit .440 as a team as Karen Halls (Jr./Edina, Minn./Edina) leads the way with 10 kills, with Maggie Carragher (Fy./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) chipping in a season-best eight kills. Caroline Duke (Fy./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) handed out 23 assists to go along with seven digs.
Against Wisconsin-Superior (6-2), the Knights claimed set victories in the first and third games but were unable to close the match out in the fourth set, as the Yellow Jackets claimed a 25-23 win to force a fifth and decisive set. Carleton was ready for the challenge, however, as the Knights were able to prevail late in the set to win by a score of 15-11 en route to a thrilling match win.
Halls tallied a career-best 19 kills in the thriller. Duke completed the triple double with 25 assists, 14 digs, and 11 kills. Alicia Flatt (Jr./Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) contributed 30 assists, while Lexi Papke (So./Strum, Wis./Regis) chipped in 10 kills.
"We had a solid weekend, and I'm excited to be 6-2 going into the upcoming week," stated Carleton head coach Heidi Jaynes. "Caroline and Alicia did a great job delivering the ball to our hitters this weekend, and I thought we especially fought hard in our last match. Our passing was excellent and our defense improved with every match."
Camille Benson (So./Savage, Minn./Burnsville) was selected to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of the event. Benson tallied a team-best 121 digs and also added 10 service aces during the two-day event to claim her second All-Tournament team honors in as many weeks.
The Knights will travel to Decorah, Iowa next weekend to participate in the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Tournament, hosted at Luther College. Carleton opens up the tournament on Friday, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m. with a match against Cornell College (Iowa) followed immediately by a 7 p.m. contest versus Knox College (Ill.).
