ELMHURST, Ill. – Jessa Youso (Sr./Virginia, Minn./Virginia) added 18 more kills on day two at the Elmhurst Invitational, helping the Carleton College volleyball team to sweeps of Bethany Lutheran College and Carroll University (Wis.) Youso was one of six players named to the all-tournament squad at this year’s 12-team event.
Claire Willeck (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) paced the Knights (4-0 overall) with 10 kills in both of Saturday’s matches. Sarah Nielsen (Sr./Altoona, Wis./Altoona) chipped in 15 of her own to rank third on the roster.
Carleton was the court early and won the opener 25-20, 25-16 and 25-20.
"We had a quick turnaround this morning after playing two matches yesterday but our team had a great start today,” said head coach Heidi Jaynes. “Our solid passing and strong serving really allowed us to control the tempo of the match, and our hitters really took over at the net.”
Youso hit .600 in the contest, thanks to consistent work from setter Alicia Flatt (So./Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet), who notched 30 assists and 10 digs to match the total of libero Camille Benson (Fy./Savage, Minn./Burnsville).
The Knights had little time to rest on their laurels, however, as they were right back on the court to face Carroll, eventually prevailing by a 25-14, 25-19 and 27-25 margin. The Knights trailed late in the third set before closing out the tournament in style following a Youso kill, Liz Groesbeck (So./Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) ace, and a Willeck attack.
"I'm so proud of our team and how they continued to rebound from any shift in momentum during our Carroll match,” said Jaynes. “It was our fourth match in 24 hours, and it was great to end the weekend by coming back and getting the win in three sets."
Flatt handed out 37 more assists in the this one with eight additional digs. Chloe Nelson (Jr./Madison, Wis./West) contributed 16 digs, while Benson recorded 25 digs, the highest three-set figure by a Knight since Laura Barsness brought up 29 against Buena Vista University in 2006.
The Knights will play four matches next weekend at the Bethel University tournament on Sept. 7-8 in Arden Hills.
