NORTHFIELD, Minn.—The Carleton College volleyball team returned home to West Gym for the first time in nearly a month, but were unable to overcome a strong Saint Benedict squad who defeated the Knights in three sets Wednesday evening. Karen Halls (Jr./Edina, Minn./Edina) led the Knight offensive attack with nine kills and a team-best three blocks, while defensive specialist Camille Benson (So./Savage, Minn./Burnsville) claimed a match-best 16 digs.

Carleton (9-6, 0-3 MIAC) hung tough against the No.12-ranked Blazers (13-1, 2-1 MIAC) in the first set. After St. Ben’s opened up a 17-10 lead midway through the set, the Knights roared back with a 9-3 scoring run to pull within a point at 20-19 following a Caroline Duke (Fy./Evanston, Ill./Evanston) kill. The Knights were unable to get any closer however, as St. Ben’s scored five out of the next six points to close out the set.

The second set featured more back and fourth action between the two teams. After the Blazers built a 20-14 lead late in the sett, the Knights rallied back and pulled to within three points at 20-17. The home team was unable to gain any more ground as the Blazers went on to win the set by 25-21.

Carleton was unable to overcome a slow start in the third set and fell by a score of 25-14.

Duke claimed a team-high 15 assists and added 10 digs and five kills, while teammate Alicia Flatt (Jr./Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) added 10 digs and 13 assists. Sami Kemper (Sr./Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) added six kills.

The Knights will return to action Friday evening when they welcome Concordia College to West Gymnasium at 7 p.m. Knights online will feature live video of the match.
