Guard Combo Can’t Lead Knights Over Gustavus

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s basketball team saw its slide continue with a 67-52 loss to Gustavus Adolphus College. Guards Michele Arima (So./Valencia, Calif./West Ranch) and Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) tallied 18 and 17 points, respectively, to pace the Knights in scoring.

“I was very pleased with our initial defensive effort this afternoon,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “We unfortunately struggled to track down the rebound, giving them easy second-chance opportunities. There was a stretch early in the second half where we were getting stops but just couldn’t cut into the lead. Had we been able to, we may have been in a better position to make a run at the end.”

The Knights (5-16, 3-15 MIAC) erased an early deficit, and Ramey’s layup in traffic knotted the score at 13-13 at the midpoint of the first half. The Gusties (13-8, 10-8) countered with a 12-0 run and led by double digits the remainder of the contest en route to their fifth consecutive victory.

Gustavus shot 45 percent from the floor while holding the Carleton to 30 percent. Karina Schroeder notched her seventh double-double of the season—game highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds—to lead three Gusties in double figures.

Emma Purfeerst (Sr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) added eight points and 11 rebounds for Carleton, which also received five points from Jessica Huang (Sr./Millbrae, Calif./Taipei American School) and four more from Gabbi Stienstra (So./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha).

The Knights make their longest road trip of the season on Monday, Feb. 10 as Carleton journeys to Concordia-Moorhead for a women’s/men’s doubleheader. Both games can be heard on KDHL 920AM and via Knights Online.
