Northfield, Minn. -- Hannah Oken-Berg (So./Portland, Ore./Lincoln) tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, but Carleton College made only 3-for-18 from three-point range and 10-for-19 from the free-throw line in falling to Hamline University, 69-61.
Krystal Tschumperlin scored 19 points as the Pipers made 12 three-pointers in ending a 20-game losing streak to Carleton (15-6, 12-6 MIAC). Jessica Heinen added 17 points and six rebounds for the Pipers (12-9, 10-8 MIAC), who notched a key victory in their quest to return to the MIAC Playoffs for the second straight season. Grace Weinreich added 11 points off the bench as the Piper reserves outscored Carleton's, 39-14.
Anna Biewen (So./Edina, Minn.) tallied 11 points and Megan Mileusnic (Fy./Orono, Minn.) added 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Annie Isler (Jr./Minneapolis/Hopkins) tallied nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Knights lost to Hamline for the first time under head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. Hamline's last win over Carleton came almost 10 years ago to the day, a Feb. 8, 1997, victory.
The Pipers nailed four three-pointers in a three-minute span and six in the first half's final eight minutes, turning a 14-14 tie game into a 34-23 halftime lead.
The Knights battled back, trimming a nine-point Hamline lead to one as Oken-Berg scored eight points during an 11-3 Carleton run, but the Pipers used the three-ball again, as Weinreich and Tschumperlin nailed triples on consecutive possessions and Heinen's lay-up pushed Hamline's lead back to nine, 62-53, with three minutes left.
Carleton shot 42 percent from the field and held Hamline to 38 percent, but the Pipers made 12-of-27 from downtown to the Knights' 3-for-18 performance.
Carleton, with Concordia-Moorhead's win at Gustavus Adolphus, now drops into fourth place in the MIAC standings, one game back of the Cobbers and one game ahead of St. Thomas, which beat Augsburg tonight. The Knights travel to Winona, Minn., on Wednesday, Feb. 7, facing St. Mary's University as part of a men's/women's doubleheader.
