Knights Can’t Surpass No. 18 St. Thomas

By Andrew Harvey '15

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) tallied 14 points, Gabbi Stienstra (So./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) added 11 points and Emma Purfeerst (Sr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) came close to another double-double, but the No. 18-ranked University of St. Thomas squad proved too deep for the short-handed Knights, who absorbed a 65-40 loss.

St. Thomas (15-3, 13-2 MIAC) jumped out to an early lead, going 15-of-29 from the field in the opening frame. Carleton (5-13, 3-12 MIAC) struggled to keep pace as the Knights converted 31.6 percent of its field-goal attempts in the period.

Following a slow start, the Knights battled back to knot the score at 11-11 with 11:30 remaining in the first half. The Tommies responded with a 24-9 run to close the period, then scored the first eight points of the second half. St. Thomas was able to maintain at least a 15-point lead throughout the balance of the contest.

Ramey and Steinstra both exceeded their season averages, and Purfeerst finished with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Taylor Young’s 18 points led the way for St. Thomas, which also got 16 points from Maggie Weiers. The Tommies shot 48 percent overall compared to 29 percent for the Knights.

“Defensively, we did a good job of keeping the ball out of the lane, but unfortunately the Tommies had a good shooting night,” said Knights head coach Cassie Kosiba. “Offensively, we had some good looks in both halves that, had they fallen, could have helped start the run we needed. Despite the end result, I feel as if the team is on an upward trend as we head into a full week of MIAC play.”

Carleton is back in action on Monday, Feb. 3, when they travel to Bethel University for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Live audio will be available on KDHL 920 AM.
