Royals Control Boards in Defeating Knights

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Despite three players in double figures, the Carleton College women’s basketball squad could not overcome a large disparity in rebounding as the Knights lost 74-51 at Bethel University.

The Knights (5-14, 3-13) started well, making their first five shots and later trailed just 17-16 with 12:30 remaining in the first half. That’s when Bethel (14-5, 12-4 MIAC) put together a 16-1 run spanning nearly eight minutes. The Knights faced a double-digit deficit the balance of the contest.

Bethel took advantage of the smaller Knights to grab 51 rebounds, including 24 offensive boards. That led to 18 second-chance points for the Royals, who notched their 10th consecutive home victory.

“We knew Bethel was going to attack the glass hard,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “I thought our defense forced the Royals into some uncharacteristic shots, but we unfortunately struggled to track down the rebound.”

Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy), Emma Purfeerst (Sr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls), and Gabbi Stienstra (So./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) finished with 13, 12, and 11 points, respectively for Carleton. Rachel Parupsky paced Bethel, going 10-of-13 from the field for 22 points and 14 rebounds as she notched her sixth double-double of the campaign.

Carleton hosts first-place and No. 18 ranked Saint Mary’s University on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Live video of that 7:30 p.m. contest will be available via Knights Online.
