NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) recorded her 11th career double-double, finishing with 19 points—one off her career best—and 11 rebounds, yet the Carleton College women’s basketball team found itself on the wrong end of a 70-58 score, falling to visiting Augsburg College.
The Auggies (5-7, 3-6 MIAC) used three big runs to pull away in this one. The visitors raced to a 13-3 lead at the 13:41 mark, only to watch the Knights (2-10, 2-7 MIAC) knot things up as Purfeerst scored seven straight points to ignite a 10-0 burst over the next five minutes.
Augsburg recovered with a 16-5 run, including seven points by Jill Tichy, who notched a game-high 21 points for the Auggies. The Knights trailed 32-25 at the break, but closed to within 42-38 five minutes into the second half. That’s when a 13-0 Augsburg run changed the tone of the contest with Carleton facing a double-digit deficit the rest of the way.
Carleton point guard Megan Chavez (Fy./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) had her best shooting performance since November, going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc as she finished with 14 points and only one turnover. Skylar Tsutsui (So./Northridge, Calif./Harvard Westlake) returned to the lineup and contributed 10 points.
The Knights host a basketball doubleheader versus Macalester College on Saturday, Jan. 12. The women tipoff at 1 p.m. with the men slated to start at 3 p.m. Knights Online will feature live video and live stats of both contests.
