Knights Unable to Complete Comeback at Saint Mary’s

By Andrew Harvey '15

WINONA, Minn. – Jenny Ramey (Jr./ Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) did her best to lead the Knights, scoring 10 points, dishing out six assists, and recording six steals. Despite her effort—and a more productive offensive showing in the second half—the Carleton College women’s basketball team was on the short end of a 57-46 setback at Saint Mary’s University.

Saint Mary’s (17-3, 14-3 MIAC) took the early momentum, opening the game on a 17-6 run and led the rest of the way. Carleton (4-16, 4-13 MIAC) struggled to keep pace in scoring production, sinking just 4-of-21 shots (19 percent) during the first period. The Cardinals carried a 29-14 advantage into the break.

The Knights managed to turn things around in the second half, but the deficit proved too great to overcome. Carleton outscored the Cardinals 32-28 in the second frame, scoring 11 points off of turnovers and shooting nearly 40 percent from the field.

In addition to Ramey’s stat-stuffing day, Skylar Tsutsui (Northridge, Calif./Harvard Westlake) contributed 11 points, Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) scored 10, and Megan Meads (Jr./ Stillwater, Minn./ Stillwater) nabbed seven rebounds.

Jessica Thone led the way for Saint Mary’s with 16 points. Jamie Stefely tacked on another 12 to help her team to the win.

The Knights will host cross-town rival St. Olaf College on Monday, Feb. 4 at 5:45 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team. At both games, donations will be accepted to benefit the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Live video and stats will be available via Knights Online.
