Knights Drop the Ball at #9 St. Thomas to Open New Year

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After a strong start, things went south in a hurry for the Carleton College women’s basketball team in its first contest of 2014. The Knights saw their season record dip to .500 with a 100-46 setback at No. 9 University of St. Thomas.

The smaller Carleton squad (4-4, 2-3 MIAC) hung with the nationally-ranked Tommies (8-1, 6-0 MIAC) during the early portion of the contest as a jumper by Skylar Tsutsui (Jr./Northridge, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) put the visitors up, 11-10, with 13:30 remaining in the first half.

Any thoughts of an upset disappeared soon after as the Knights missed their following 11 field-goal attempts, while the Tommies scored the game’s next 17 points and never looked back.

Carleton shot a season-worst 25 percent from the field while St. Thomas made 57 percent of its attempts, including an impressive 11-of-17 (65 percent) showing from beyond the arc.

Tsutsui finished with 13 points to lead the Knights, who also got 11 points off the bench from Michele Arima (So./Valencia, Calif./West Ranch).

Pre-season All-American Taylor Young had 15 points to pace the Tommies, who had five players in double figures.

Carleton is slated to take the court next at Saint Mary’s University on Monday, Jan. 6. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and live audio of the game will be available via KDHL 920 AM and Knights Online.
