THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Megan Chavez (Fy./Westminster, Colo./Holy Family) was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and accounted for a team-best 23 points as the Carleton College women’s basketball team came up short, falling 82-71 against Chapman University. She was named to the five-person 2012 Posada Royal Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Knights (0-2) led 25-24 with 5:17 remaining in the first half, but the Panthers (4-0) went on an 18-0 run over the next five minutes and led the rest of the way.
Down by as many as 18 in the second half, Carleton battled back and closed within six points with 1:15 remaining but for the second consecutive night the rally ran out of time.
Led by Chavez’s sharpshooting, the Knights connected on 53 percent (8-of-15) of their long-range attempts and shot 44 percent overall. Carleton out-rebounded Chapman by a wide margin, but the Panthers’ 36-to-11 edge in points off turnovers was the deciding factor.
The Knights’ Emma Purfeerst (Jr./River Falls, Wis./River Falls) narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds. First-years Michele Arima (Valencia, Calif./West Ranch) and Gabby Steinstra (St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha) contributed eight points apiece.
Chapman’s Emily McCoy, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding player, had a game-high 27 points. Kimi Takaoka added 17 points.
Carleton opens MIAC play at St. Catherine University on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
