The Carleton College women’s cross country team posted a 3.56 cumulative grade-point average for the 2012 fall term and is one of 197 programs across the country recognized as an All-Academic team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Knights also had three individuals earn spots on the national All-Academic squad with first-years Sally Donovan, Shira Kaufman and Ruth Steinke making the list.

It seems like everyone and their dog comes out with some sort of year-end list, so Knights Online feels obligated to follow the crowd. This isn’t necessarily a list of the most popular stories on the website because you won’t find a single coaching change on this list…that’s too easy. Instead, just in time to ring in the New Year, here are the top-10 storylines—the things that caught our attention—on Knights Online during the last 12 months.

The Carleton College women’s cross country team—which entered the national meet ranked No. 28 in the country—placed 17th at the NCAA Division III Championships held at the LaVern Gibson Course. Ruth Steinke paced the Knights, placing 47th in a field of 277 racers with a time of 22:14.8.

The Carleton College women’s cross country team received one of 16 at-large bids to the 2012 NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17. This is the second consecutive year that the Knights will send the entire team to the national meet and eighth time in program history.

The young Carleton College women’s cross country team seems to be hitting its stride as a trio of Knights earned All-Region distinction at the NCAA Central Region Championships. First-years Ruth Steinke, Shira Kaufman, and Sally Donovan placed 12th, 17th, and 22nd respectively as Carleton finished in a fourth-place tie with Gustavus Adolphus College keeping the No. 29 Knights in contention for an at-large bid to next week’s NCAA Championships.

With three rookies and a sophomore among the squad’s top four finishers, the Carleton College women’s cross country team came up just short in defending its conference crown, finishing third at the 2012 MIAC Championships. The quartet of Ruth Steinke, Shira Kaufman, Colette Celichowski, and Sally Donovan each earned All-MIAC distinction. This was the second straight year Carleton had four all-conference performers and only the third time in team history.
