ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Carleton women's cross country team had an outstanding showing Saturday at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn. The Knights' top-three finish in the loaded field was the best by a MIAC team, and they were led by Colette Chelichowski (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka). The Carleton junior turned it on over the second half of the race to cross the finish line in sixth place. For her performance, Celichowski was named the MIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week.
Celichowski completed the course in 22:56 to earn her top-six finish in a race that featured 412 runners. She was in 11th at the midway point, but moved up five spots over the final three kilometers to earn her top-10 finish, and help her team take third out of 29 schools. Carleton finished behind only No. 2 Wartburg and nationally-ranked Bates, and finished ahead of three nationally-ranked programs and two others receiving votes.
The Knights—ranked No. 12 in the nation—will be back in action Friday with a trip into Wisconsin. Carleton will compete in the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational, which will be held at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis., starting at 4 p.m. Celichowski and her teammates have two races left on the schedule to prepare for the 2013 MIAC Championships on Nov. 2.
