WAVERLY, Iowa--Kelsey Moede (Fy./Lake Oswego, Ore.) rolled in three lengthy birdie putts on the front nine of Saturday's first round of the Wartburg Spring Invitational, propelling her to a seven-over par 79 and a tie for third place.
Moede enters Sunday's final round three shots back of tournament leader Taylor Drenttel of Gustavus, who fired a four-over par 76. UW-Eau Claire's Sara Mattes is solo second at 78, followed by Moede and three other players at 79.
Mattes and the No. 5 BluGolds lead the team chase at 316, with No. 10 Gustavus two shots back at 318. No. 12 St. Olaf is third at 330, followed by No. 15 Wartburg at 332 and No. 19 Carleton at 336.
"Unfortunately, we weren't able to pair a good round with Kelsey's score," Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. "It was great to see Kelsey break out like that, and draining those three long putts certainly helped her gain some strokes on the field." Sieger relayed the greens were quite fast, with a number of tough pin placements. That, coupled with the cold, rainy conditions, put scoring conditions at less than ideal.
Gina Kabasakalis (Fy./Alameda, Calif.) and Taylor Wells (Fy./Rochester, Minn./Century) added 84 and 86, respectively, while Traci Johnson (Sr./Lakeville, Minn./North) added an 87 to round out Carleton's scoring.
Final-round play commences on Sunday at 9 a.m.
