KANEOHE, Hawaii–– Kelsey Moede (So./Lake Oswego, Ore.) swept her two matches and Gina Kabasakalis (So./Alameda, Calif./College Prep) and Mara Daly (Fy./Hopkins, Minn./St. Louis Park) both won single matches as Carleton College split on the final day of the Aloha @ Oahu Collegiate Classic’s match-play format.

The Knights beat host Hawaii Pacific University, 3-2, but fell to Whitman College (Wash.), 3.5-1.5. Carleton ended up tying for first place overall with the Missionaries after the Knights won the stroke-play portion of the event. Whitman won a sudden-death, team playoff.

“Overall, we felt like it was a really successful trip and the match-play portion will benefit us this spring,” Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. “Almost all the matches were tight, and having that pressure on us was a good thing and I felt like we responded pretty well and hit some really good shots coming down the stretch.”

Moede, playing from the second spot on day two, beat Whitman’s Catelyn Webber 2 and 1 and HPU’s Presli Pilati 3 and 2.

“Kelsey hit the ball much better than day one and was just rock-solid all day, much like she was this fall,” Sieger said.

Gilmore lost her match to HPU’s Kailee Kuehn but earned a half point against Whitman’s Tate Head in a back-and-forth match. “I thought Grace’s ball-striking was spot-on all week, and we’re excited to see what she does this spring,” Sieger said. “If she can have a solid spring, that bodes well for us moving forward.” Wells was another player that Sieger singled out for her improved ball striking. “Taylor seemed to find ‘it’ again, and we’ve worked hard on her swing this winter and she hit a high number of quality shots in that final round,” he said.

“Overall, the entire experience of going to Hawaii and competing was extremely memorable,” Sieger said.

The Knights are back in action on April 13-14 at the St. Thomas Invitational at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minn.
