Start of Season Hours Away

In about one hour we’ll leave for the course to begin our warm-up session for our first tournament round of the 2010-11 season.

You can read our season preview on the main athletics site, but the short version is that we’re very excited for this season. We have all of our players returning from last year’s team, which set a school single-season scoring record. At the end of last spring we were playing very well, and we add two-time all-conference player Laura Knutson ’11 back into the line-up (she was abroad in the spring). Traditionally, our program's weakness has been lack of depth within our line-up, but I think we enter this season with solid players throughout. With three seniors, last year's conference freshman of the year in Hope Keaney '13 and our most improved player from last year, Traci Johnson '12, I think we're solid from top to bottom.

With everything returning, we still need to make improvements if we want to take that next step and become a truly elite team in Division III. We’ve been centering most of our attention this past week to what Stan Utley says are the three most important short-game shots: the lag putt, the basic pitch and the basic bunker shot. It seems so simple, but I truly think if we can execute those three types of shots this weekend, we’ll post a pretty good number and finish.

This season also marks the senior year for three of our players: Laura, Louise Buckler and Meghan Gajare. It’s very hard to believe that these three young women are in their final year with our program. It seems it was just yesterday that those three stepped into our starting line-up as freshmen. It’s been truly awesome to see these three grow, as players but mostly as people, these last three years. We’re so fortunate to have three women of this caliber in our program and to serve as role models and leaders for the other players in our program.

Well, time to get ready to head to the course. Go Knights!
