Women's Soccer hosts Wartburg

Northfield, Minn. - Bell Field

Result: L 1-3

Knights Fall in 2009 Debut

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton got on the scoreboard first, but Wartburg countered with a trio on unanswered scores to hand the Knights a 3-1 defeat in the season-opener for both teams. Rookie Marlena Hartman-Filson (Evergreen, Colo./Colorado Academy) tallied Carleton’s score in the 23rd minute.

After controlling play in the early portion of the game, the home team broke through with a goal at the 22:33 mark. A shot by Cassie Burke (So./Sunfish Lake, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) was turned aside by Wartburg keeper Christina Ernst, but Hartman-Filson picked up the loose ball in the box and deposited it in the net.

Wartburg, however, answered with the equalizer five minutes later.

The visitors then pushed across two more scores over a five-minute span midway through the second half. Wartburg got a rebound goal of its own from Taylor Vermie, then tacked on a Lindsey Boyke header off a corner kick soon after. Wartburg held a 10-4 edge in second-half shots.

The usually extremely stingy Carleton defense surrendered three goals only once in the last 63 contests (a 3-0 loss to UW-Eau Claire on Oct. 5, 2008).

Carleton faces another tough challenge on Friday, Sept. 4 when the Knights face national No. 2 Wheaton College on the road.
