WHEATON, Ill. – The No. 21 Carleton women’s soccer team absorbed a 4-0 setback at the feet of the No. 2 Wheaton College Thunder on the opening day of action at the Bob Baptista Invitational. The Knights trailed by a pair at halftime, and two early second-half goals almost a minute apart sealed the victory for the Thunder.
Wheaton, which knocked Carleton from a chance at the 2008 Final Four, was in control throughout much of the match. The home team scored in the 14th minute when Ali Kopelman scored of a pass through the box from Taryne Lee. A Keri Shannon header at 29:08 extended the lead.
The final two scores came in quick succession early in the second stanza, Kopelman found Lee for a goal at 52:26. Lee then assisted on Jaime Orewiler’s score 62 second later.
The Knights were out-shot 16-9, and the Thunder enjoyed a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Carleton will face DePauw University—which lost to No. 11 University of Puget Sound 4-0 on day one—at 11:30 a.m. on Sat., September 5.
