WHEATON, Ill. – The Carleton women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against DePauw University on day two of the Bob Baptista Invitational. Sophomore Linnea Carlson (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) got the Knights on the scoreboard in the 15th minute, but the Tigers found the equalizer moments after halftime.
The Knights did a good job of running their offense and switching sides of the field in the early going. Jill Merkle (So./Wayzata, Minn./Hopkins) served a lofted ball over the Tigers’ midfield line and Carlson timed her run perfectly. She made good contact on the ball and sent it past the DePauw netminder.
Carleton generated plenty of scoring chances, finishing the afternoon with 29 shots. “The key for us this year is finishing more of those opportunities,” said head coach Keren Gudeman.
Other the DePauw goal shortly after halftime, Carleton got exceptional play from its goals. Rookie Beth Ashinsky (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) turned aside a pair of shots in the opening half, while junior Kate Trenerry (Rochester, Minn./Century) did a good job coming off her line to make five stops during the second half and overtime.
Carleton and DePauw played on Friday, it seemed as if both teams were playing on tired legs. Neither team was able to dominate possession, though, especially over the final 65 minutes.
Gudeman took advantage of the consecutive games to get a number of her younger players additional experience.
The Knights now travel to Loras College for a 4:00 p.m. match on Monday, Sept. 7.
