Result: L 1-2 (OT)

Lead Slips Away Late, Knights Fall in Overtime

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Carleton women’s soccer team was minutes away from its first victory of the season, but Loras College notched a late goal to send the contest into overtime where the Duhawks tallied the game winner in the 92nd minute.

Lily VanderStaay (So./Bellingham, Wash.) got Carleton (0-3-1) on the scoreboard at the 28:09 mark when she curled her corner kick into the net. It was the Knights’ third shot of the contest and accounted for VanderStaay’s first score of the season and her fourth career goal.

The Loras defense settled in and did not permit a Carleton shot the rest of the first half. In fact the Duhawks (2-1-1) out-shot the Knights 12-3 over the remainder of the contest.

It appeared that the Knights would survive the Loras attack until Jessica Kern and Kate Young combined to get the ball past Carleton netminder Kate Trenerry (Jr./Rochester, Minn./Century) in the 87th minute.

Less than 90 seconds into bonus time, Kern assisted on Sam Messacar’s game winner.

This was Carleton's second consecutive overtime game, and the Knights have held the lead in three of their four contests.

Carleton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 13 to host a women’s-men’s doubleheader against Carthage College. Both games will be webcast on Knights Online with the first contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
