Knights Work Overtime, Still Come Up Short

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s soccer team dropped its MIAC opener, losing 2-1 in overtime to host Gustavus Adolphus. After surrendering a goal in the 39th minute, the Knights tied the score four minutes later as Niki Tomita (So./Redwood City, Calif./Woodside) converted a penalty kick.

Neither team could generate much offense in the first half. The two sides needed more than seven-and-a-half minutes to unleash the games’ first shot. They later went through one stretch lasting 20 minutes without an attempt. Finally at 38:35, Becca Hagen took the home team’s second shot of the day and got Gustavus on the scoreboard.

Moments later, Tomita tallied her first goal, sending the teams into halftime deadlocked.

The Knights defense continued its strong play, allowing Gustavus to take only two shots during the second half, none over the last 25 minutes.

The Knights finished with a 14-5 advantage in shot attempts. Unfortunately the Gusties’ Karen Maus got the lone scoring chance in overtime, and she converted for her third goal of the season.

Carleton will be back on the road on Saturday, Sept. 19 as the Knights travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary’s University.
