Knights Find Rhythm Early, Ground Eagles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s soccer team returned home and posted a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in a non-conference match. Sophomores Cassie Burke (Sunfish Lake, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) and Linnea Carlson (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) tallied first-half goals, and junior goalkeeper Kate Trenerry (Rochester, Minn./Century) made it stand up as the Knights recorded their third shutout in the last four games.

“La Crosse gave us a great game, as they play physically and with intensity,” said Carleton head coach Keren Gudeman. “We appreciated the competitive opportunity.”

In the 18th minute, defender Emma Dobbins (Portland, Ore./Grant) played a long clear into the attacking third. Burke out-ran the defense to the loose ball and struck a low shot into the far side of the Eagles’ net.

“Emma found a channel behind the defense that we have been working on finding in practice all week,” Gudeman said.

Less than 10 minutes later the Knights use some crisp passing to move the ball up the right wing. Zoe Suche (Fy./Calgary, Alb./Western Canada) then settled the ball in the corner and sent a cross along the goal line that sailed right onto the foot of Carlson, who re-directed it soundly into the wide open side of the net.

Each team finished the match with six shots on goal, but Trenerry did a great job of communication and aligning the defense as she posted her first shutout of the campaign. Trenerry also had a game-changing save in the 12th minute when she denied Lindsay Wilde’s bid for an early score.

The Knights will return to conference play on Sat., September 26 when they travel to Hamline University for a 1 p.m. contest.
