ST. PAUL, Minn. – Linnea Carlson’s (So./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) goal in the 88th minute gave the Carleton College women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory at Hamline. In the process the Knights posted their third consecutive shutout and avoid a potential upset.
"Hamline did a nice job of low-pressuring us defensively, and it took us a while to figure out how to get in behind their back line,” said head coach Keren Gudeman.
“We had some nice opportunities throughout the game, but were unable to finish. Their keeper came up with some key saves as well.”
Carleton (4-4-1, 2-1 MIAC) enjoyed a 13-2 advantage in shots, including a 6-0 margin during the opening 45 minutes but nearly had nothing to show for it.
The Knights raised their intensity over the last 15 minutes and looked for the game-changing play.
Even when Carleton worked things properly it seemed that the Knights might be thwarted once again. Sarah Hagerty (Fy./ Boulder, Colo.) got in behind her defender, beat the keeper, but her shot hit off the post.
However, this time things went Carleton’s way as the ball ricocheted back into the middle of the six-yard box, where two forwards had flooded the area. Carlson fired an off-balance shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the week and third this season.
Beth Ashinsky (Fy./Mount Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) got the starting nod in net for Carleton and recorded her second shutout in as many starts.
The loss dropped Hamline to 2-7 overall, 0-4 in conference play.
The Knights have two more road games this week with trips to Macalester College (Wed., September 30) and the College of Saint Benedict (Sat., October 3) on the docket. Those contests will conclude this challenging season-opening stretch that featured eight of 11 contests away from home.
