Knights Prevail Through Heat Against Redlands in Season Opener

By Andrew Harvey '15

WHEATON, Ill. – Despite on-field temperatures in the triple digits, the Carleton College women’s soccer team managed to push through the heat to score a game-winning goal in the 79th minute against the University of the Redlands Bulldogs in its season opener at the Bob Baptista Invitational Tournament.

After failing to record a shot in the first half, Carleton (1-0) struck gold when Bailey Ulbricht (Jr./Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) pushed a ball forward to Caroline Sheffield (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Garfield). Sheffield collected it and buried the ball in the corner of the net, scoring her first collegiate goal and the eventual game-winner.

The Bulldogs put the lead in peril late in the game by winning a corner kick in the 88th minute, but the kick failed to connect and time expired, leaving the Knights with the 1-0 victory.

The Knights’ defensive effort was anchored by goalkeeper Mikayla Coulombe (So./Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s), who recorded four saves while keeping a clean sheet.

“Today's win was a great way to begin our season, and with so many young players it provides a bit of confidence moving forward,” said head coach Jocelyn Keller after the match. “Our second half was stronger than our first with more deliberate play and immediacy going forward.”

The Knights return to the same field tomorrow for their match against Montclair State University, who was listed No. 23 in the NSCAA’s preseason national poll.

“We have a challenge ahead of us and would love to see the women compete with the same intensity tomorrow,” said Keller.
