Horn’s Double Brings Knights Win over Knox

By Andrew Harvey '15

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior Madeline Horn (Hamilton, Ont./Westdale Secondary) had a standout performance for the Carleton College women’s soccer team today, scoring a brace of goals—including the game-winning tally—in a dominant 3-0 win over Knox College.

Carleton (2-1) took the lead in the seventh minute, when Connor Kasch (So./Marengo, Ill./Illinois Math & Science Acad.) sent in a corner kick from the left side. The ball came down in traffic, and Horn muscled her way to it, smashing it home for the game-winning tally.

Knox (0-2) was unable to respond as the Carleton defense controlled the midfield. The hosts out-shot the Prairie fire, 27-0, and enjoyed a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Edith Emmings (So./Saint Paul, Minn./Central) notched the second goal of the contest in the 43rd minute, as she corralled a loose ball and sent it under the keeper into the left side of the net.

Horn notched her second goal of the afternoon in the 81st minute, assisted by Caroline Sheffield’s (So./Seattle, Wash./Garfield) corner service from the right side. Horn stepped up and buried a header past a diving goalie.

“Our intention was to be creative going forward, and we did that today,” said Carleton head coach Jocelyn Keller after the match. “I’m definitely pleased with the result, and I was happy to see our backline stepping up to connect on corners. But we can always get better at finishing.”

The Knights return to action on Sunday, Sept. 7, at home against Grinnell College at 2 p.m. Live stats and video coverage will be available on Knights Online.
