Knights Stumble Against Scots

By Andrew Harvey '15

ST. PAUL, Minn. – After knocking off a nationally-ranked Augsburg squad on Saturday, the Carleton College women’s soccer team could not carry over the momentum to a primetime tussle at Macalester College. The Knights absorbed a 4-0 setback that leaves them in a three-way tie for fifth place in the MIAC standings, only one point out of the final playoff spot with four regular-season games remaining.

Mikayla Coulombe (So/Crystal, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s) matched her season high with 10 saves, but the Scots (8-3-1, 5-2 MIAC) controlled the ball for most of the match, outshooting Carleton (6-7-1, 4-3 MIAC) by a 22-4 margin.

The Scots, named the No. 7 team in the region in today’s NSCAA poll, struck first in the 20th minute, when Bonnie Gale collected a cross from the right and slotted it into the left side of the net for the game-winner.

Macalester added three more strikes in the second half, with Georgia Cloepfil scoring off both a rebound in the 48th and off a cross in the 60th, and Hannah Walker putting the final touch on the shutout as the result of a fast break in the 88th minute.

Carleton will return to St. Paul, Minn. to take on Hamline University on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. That will be the Knights final road-match before closing the regular season with home contests against first-place Concordia as well as St. Thomas and St. Olaf, the two squads tied with Carleton for fifth place.
