MINNEAPOLIS – Milana Socha (So./Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Sophie Pilhofer (Jr./Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Visitation) garnered All-MIAC distinction for the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team on day two of the MIAC Championships. Socha finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.70, while Pihofer placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.17.
Carleton’s other All-Conference performance came in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Socha, Erin McDuffie (Jr./Anchorage, Alaska/Service), Molly Spence (Jr./Tacoma, Wash./Woodrow Wilson), and Maggie Alexander (Sr./Tigard, Ore./Tualatin) posted a time of 7:50.89, which ranked third overall.
After day two, the Knights are fifth in the team competition with 307 points, only eight behind College of Saint Benedict for fourth.
Austen Chase (Sr./San Antonio, Texas/International School) earned Carleton’s first points of the evening session when she finished fifth in the 3-meter diving competition with an 11-dive score of 353.40.
In the night’s first race, the 200-yard medley relay, Carleton placed fifth as Annie Metcalf (Sr./Bath, Maine/Morse), Alison Coogan (Fy./River Forest, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest), Pilhofer, and Socha combined for a time of 1:50.71.
Metcalf was back in the water moments later, finishing seventh in the 400-yard individual medley at 4:47.26. In the consolation final, Coogan placed 13th, and Samantha Sharpe (So./San Rafael, Calif./San Rafael) was 16th.
In addition to PIlhofer’s result in the 100 fly, Mallory Pernell (Sr./Austin, Texas/Westlake) swam in the consolation heat, placing 16th at 1:03.09.
The Knights had three racers in the championship heat of the 200 freestyle. McDuffie earned a spot by winning a swim-off during the preliminary round and ended up sixth overall with a time of 1:56.77. Alexander was seventh at 1:57.33. Spence raced in the consolation final, finishing 11th at 1:58.50.
Metcalf was Carleton’s top finisher in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 58.80, which ranked fourth. Coogan was 10th with a time of 59.99.
The conference championships conclude on Saturday with prelims slated for 10:30 a.m. and event finals set for 6:30 p.m.
