Women's Swimming and Diving at University of St. Thomas Relays

Saturday, October 26th, 2013 – 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul, Minn. - Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex

Knights Open Season at UST Relays

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team took part in its first true competition of the 2013-14 season with the unique and competitive St. Thomas Relay Meet. The day’s racing included nine relay events plus diving for the eight-team field.

In addition to typical relays like the 200-, 400-, and 800-yard freestyle relays, this meet included a co-ed medley relay; 300-yard breaststroke, butterfly, and backstroke relays; the 4x100 IM relay; and the 1100-yard animal relay.

“This meet has always served two primary purposes for us,” explained Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “First, it has been an excellent opportunity for us to gauge where we are at a very early point in the season. Second, it provides us the chance to witness our first-year students in their first competitive experience at the collegiate level. To this end, I was impressed with the efforts and results that both teams posted and was especially excited about how our first-year swimmers performed.”

Carleton’s top finishes on this day were a trio of third-place results.

The Knights took third place in the 800-yard freestyle relay with Milana Socha (Sr./Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton); Masha Toulokhonova (Fy./Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto); Brittany Salazar (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Waldorf); and Alex Braiedy (Fy./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) combining on a time of 8:16.97.

Carleton also finished third in the 300-yard backstroke relay, which involved two swimmers going 50 yards apiece and the other pair racing 100 yards each. Alison Coogan (Jr./River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) joined Socha, Toulokhonvoa, and Maria Wetzel (Fy./Salem, Ore./West Salem) in posting a time of 3:03.74.

In the traditional 200-yard freestyle relay, the Knights once again placed third with a time of 1:42.20. The quartet turning in that performance included Chloe Rouhandeh (Fy./New York, N.Y./Dalton School); Kiersten Stoeckel (So./Faribault, Minn./Faribault); Jesse Weaver (So./Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle); and Claire Wilson (Sr./Franklin, Ind./Franklin).

Diver Lydia Henderson (So./Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley) placed ninth on the 1-meter board and 13th at the 3-meter height.

The Knights will host Minnesota State-Moorhead, St. Olaf, and St. Catherine for a quad dual meet on Friday, Nov. 1 beginning at 6 p.m.
