NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Although the swim season officially began only two days ago, the Carleton College swim teams engaged in their first “competition” of the young campaign as they hosted the annual Alumni/Intra-squad meet.
The focus of today’s races at Thorpe Pool was team camaraderie and bragging rights as opposed to setting pool records or winning championships. The non-traditional lineup of events, including the "Plunge for Distance," was a great way to start the 2009-2010 swimming and diving season.
A great turnout for the day’s activities included a 33-member alumni team—which spanned from the class of 1983 to the most recent graduating class of 2009. After the meet, current team members, coaches, alums, and their families enjoyed a BBQ at the West Gym.
"The Alumni/Intra-squad Meet is an exciting and fun tradition to kick off the season,” said head coach Andy Clark. “It is impressive and inspiring to see so many alums return to campus to swim and dive at this meet, even if they haven't touched the water in years. The energy that the alums give to the program at Carleton is contagious and adds to the excitement of the upcoming season."
Unfortunately for some and fortunately for others, no official scores were kept.
The Knights season gets underway in earnest with the Carleton/St. Olaf Relays on Saturday, Oct. 31.
