NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophie Pilhofer (Sr./Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Visitation) broke a Thorpe Pool record in winning the 100-yard butterfly as the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team hosted Minnesota State-Moorhead and St. Olaf College on Friday night. Pilhofer touched the wall in 59.55, three-hundredths of a second faster than Marie Marsman’s mark that had stood since 2003.
Pilhofer was award the squad’s “Can of Corn” trophy as she also added second-place results in the 50-yard butterfly (27.86) and 200-yard freestyle relay.
Milana Socha (Jr./Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.28 and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle.
The Knights closed the evening with a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay. Pilhofer, Socha, Madison McBride (Fy./Elko, Minn./Lakeville South) and Erin McDuffie (Sr./Anchorage, Alaska/Service) edged St. Olaf by 0.03, finishing in 1:41.29.
Carleton’s men’s and women’s teams will be in the water on Saturday, Nov. 3 as they co-host the Cows, Colleges & Contentment Classic. The diving competition will be held at Carleton, while the swimming races will be contested across town at St. Olaf College beginning at 11 a.m.
