NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s swimming team saw action for the second day in a row, this time at the Cows, Colleges, and Contentment Classic. The meet, which was co-hosted by the Knights and cross-town rival St. Olaf, pitted the Northfield neighbors against tough competitors, among them a number of Division II schools including Minnesota State University at Mankato, St. Cloud State University, and Minnesota State University at Moorhead.

First-year Maria Wetzel (Salem, Ore./West Salem) once again led the Knights with a string of stellar performances. She took second in a field of 30 racers in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08:29. In the 200-yard freestyle, Wetzel placed sixth out of a field of 48, with a time of 2:01:23.

Wetzel’s efforts were bolstered by strong showings from a number of her teammates. Senior Milana Socha (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) beat 60 opponents to take first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.00. She was also 11th in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:03.57.

Additionally, the relay team of Socha and Wetzel along with sophomores Madison McBride (Elko, Minn./Lakeville South) and Brittany Salazar (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Waldorf) came in ninth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

After a busy weekend, the Knights have a few days to rest before they host the visiting Tommies of the University of St. Thomas next Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.
