Pilhofer Takes Third in 50 Free at NCAA Championships, Earns All-America Status

Sophie Pilhofer, Women's Swimming and Diving headshotSHENANDOAH, Texas – Carleton College senior Sophie Pilhofer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Visitation) became the 15th member of the women’s swimming and diving program to earn All-America status, and the ninth to do so in an individual event when she grabbed third place in the finals of the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. (SEE CHART BELOW).

She was seeded sixth entering the day. During the morning preliminary round she eclipsed her personal best time as she touching the wall at 23.33 for the third-fastest time of the session. The two-time MIAC champion at this distance, she improved upon her time during the championship final, reaching the timing pad at 23.28 to place third overall.

Kirsten Nitz of Wheaton College (Ill.) established the NCAA D-III record in the event last month and won this evening’s race with a time of 22.87. Kellie Pennington of Springfield College took second at 23.07 followed by Pilhofer, Chandra Lukes (Redlands) at 23.31, and Louise Moores (Stevens) at 23.35.

This year’s NCAA Championships run through Saturday and are being held at the Conroe ISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas. Each day includes the preliminary round beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT). The finals get underway at 6 p.m. (CDT) and include the top 16 finishers from the prelims with spots 1-8 taking part in the championship final while slots 9-16 race in the consolation heat.

Pilhofer will swim the 100-yard butterfly on Thursday and the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday.
