LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team hosted St. Cloud State University, a regionally-ranked NCAA Division II program, for the indoor season opener for both schools. The Knights, who are not only regionally ranked themselves but also hold down the No. 21 spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, got the new year off to a solid start with a convincing 9-0 victory over the Huskies.

Carleton set the tone with its play in doubles as the Knights posted win by scores of 8-1, 8-0, and 8-2. That momentum carried over to singles action where all six Knights prevailed in straight sets.

Leading the way for the Knights was Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins). The three-time All-American not only blanked Cassandra Brown, a regionally-ranked opponent in singles, but Schmidt teamed with Bridget Doyle (Jr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) for a convincing 8-1 triumph over the Huskies regionally-ranked duo of Brown and Katie Kotschevar.

Doyle had the toughest challenge of the evening, but she survived her singles match against Kotschevar 7-6 (9-7) and 6-2.

At third through sixth singles, neither Anne Lombardi (So./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), Molly Hemes (So./Green Bay, Wis./Preble), Katherine Greenberg (So./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton), nor Felicity Flesher (So./Oxford, Miss./Oxford) dropped more than three games in any set.

“This was a good first match for us, considering how early it is in the season,” said Carleton head coach Luciano Battaglini. “We’re looking forward to kepp improving all season.”

Carleton will host Hamline University on Thursday, Feb. 9 in the MIAC opener for both programs. That match will be held at Life Time Fitness in Lakeville, Minn. and is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
