HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Showing little signs of rust despite more than two weeks away from competition, the Carleton College women’s tennis team opened its Spring Break trip with a convincing 9-0 triumph over Allegheny College in a matchup of regionally-ranked squads. After being off campus during the winter term, Erin Gudul (Sr./North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) returned to the lineup and posted victories at both singles and doubles.

The Knights, ranked No. 21 in the nation and No. 6 in the central region, swept the doubles matches. Carleton’s ranked tandem of Bridget Doyle (Jr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) and Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) posted an 8-2 victory as did Gudul and Katherine Greenberg (So./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) at third doubles.

The Gators, ranked No. 25 in the region, came closest to claiming a point at second doubles, but Molly Hemes (So./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) and Anne Lombardi (So./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) prevailed by an 8-5 margin.

Schmidt, who moved up two spots to No. 3 in the latest regional rankings, notched a 7-5, 6-0 win atop the singles lineup. Doyle, listed at No. 17 in the region, recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the second spot.

Lombardi blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at the third spot, and Gudul cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.

Hemes and Greenberg both improved to 7-1 on the season as they tallied wins by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0 at the other two slots.

Carleton will face No. 6 University of Chicago on Wednesday in a meeting of nationally-ranked programs.
