HILTON HEAD, S.C. – After having its final Spring Break match moved due to rainy weather, the No. 21 Carleton College women’s tennis team lost to No. 30 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Knights (7-4) came out on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision with two of the matches unfinished since the team result was already decided.
Bridget Doyle (Jr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) and Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) prevailed at first doubles, 9-7, in a tight match between regionally-ranked tandems. The Knights’ pairing is ranked No. 10 while the Warhawks duo of Kalla Schaefer and Alexandra Bayliss is ranked No. 3.
UW-Whitewater (13-2) won the other two doubles contests and carried the momentum over to singles, winning three of the four completed matches. The Warhawks are undefeated against Division III opponents this season.
Anne Lombardi (So./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) was the lone Carleton victor during the singles portion of the match, prevailing 6-4, 6-3 at the third spot.
After dropping the opening set of her first singles match versus No. 2-ranked Schaefer, Schmidt—ranked No. 3 in the region—battled back to force a super tiebreaker but eventually lost 6-0, 2-6, 10-3.
Doyle was in control at second singles 6-4, 4-1 when play was stopped.
Carleton returns home for the start of the spring term and will host Concordia College next Saturday, March 31 at 10:00 a.m.
