NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team returned home to the Bell Field Courts and opened its home outdoor season with a convincing 9-0 victory over Concordia College.
Erin Gudul (Sr./North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and Katherine Greenberg (So./St. Louis, Mo./Clayton) had relatively stress-free encounters at fourth and sixth singles as each lost just one game, prevailing by identical scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
Bridget Doyle (Jr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation), Molly Hemes (So./Green Bay, Wis./Preble), and Anne Lombardi (So./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) also recorded straight-set victories in singles.
The Knights’ top singles player, Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins), took part in the toughest match of the day. She dropped the opening set 3-6, then bounced back 6-1 to force the super tiebreaker which also went her way by a 12-10 margin.
Schmidt and Gudul, Carleton top doubles pairing for the last three seasons, finally played together for the first time this season, and the pair notched an 8-3 triumph at first doubles. Gudul was off campus during winter term and missed the indoor portion of the season. The Knights second and third doubles pairings notched identical 8-0 triumphs today.
Carleton will host Grinnell College on Sunday, April 1 in a matchup of regionally-ranked squads. Action is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
