NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team—ranked No. 29 in the latest national poll—celebrated April Fools Day with a 9-0 victory over previously unbeaten Grinnell College. Sophomores Anne Lombardi and Katherine Greenberg won three-set matches during singles action to complete the Knights’ sweep.

Grinnell was riding an 18-match win streak but saw that run come to a crashing halt today. The battle of regionally-ranked opponents—Carleton is No. 6 in the central region and the Pioneers are No. 13—opened with the Knights winning all three doubles matches.

Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) and Erin Gudul (Sr./North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) posted an 8-6 triumph at first doubles, while the Knights saw easier success at the other spots. Lombardi and Bridget Doyle (Jr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) notched an 8-1 victory at the second spot, and Greenberg and Molly Hemes (So./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) posted the 8-2 win at third doubles.

Schmidt and Doyle, both regionally-ranked singles players, dominated at the top two singles spots, dropping a combined three games as they each prevailed in straight sets.

Gudul and Hemes also required only two sets to prevail 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-4 respectively at fourth and fifth singles.

After dropping her first set 4-6, Lombardi bounced back with a 6-0 second set then won the super tiebreaker 10-6. Greenberg notched the final point in the team competition with a 6-3, 6-7, 10-4 triumph.
