NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College women’s tennis team continued its historic season on Saturday, defeating five-time defending champ Gustavus Adolphus for the third time this season to claim the MIAC playoff title and earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA championships. Senior Erin Gudul (Sr./North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) turned in an impressive performance in her final MIAC playoffs with a straight-sets singles win and a pair of convincing victories at No. 1 doubles that were crucial to Carleton’s title run. For her outstanding championship performance, Gudul has been named the MIAC Women’s Tennis athlete-of-the-week, becoming the fourth Knight to receive the honor in its inaugural season.

Gudul and her doubles partner Kathryn Schmidt (Sr./Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) demonstrated why they are ranked No. 6 in the region with to more decisive victories during the conference tournament. After posting an 8-2 victory over St. Thomas in the semifinal round, the duo returned to the court later that day and knocked off the Gusties’ Megan Gaard and Laurel Krebsbach, 8-4, as the Knights took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Gudul followed this with a key 6-4, 6-1 victory at fourth singles over Megan Born to give Carleton a 3-2 lead in the match.

Despite having to wait until spring break to join the team due to academic commitments, Gudul has played a key role in Carleton’s success this year. She is 10-7 overall in singles, 3-2 in the MIAC, as well as 11-5 in doubles with a fantastic 5-0 record in MIAC doubles play.

Carleton is 18-5 overall and went a perfect 10-0 in regular season MIAC play this season to capture the conference’s regular-season crown, snapping Gustavus’ streak of 20-straight titles. As the MIAC’s automatic qualifer, the Knights will make their fourth trip as a team to the NCAA Championships and open the national tournament against Grinnell College on Friday, May 11.
