HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Anne Lombardi (Jr./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) topped the ninth-ranked singles player in the region, but the Carleton College women’s tennis team still absorbed a 6-3 loss to the University of Chicago, the No. 5 team in the county.
The Maroons (8-3) swept the three doubles matches, but action was close at the top two flights where Carleton (7-4) faced four regionally-ranked players. Bridget Doyle (Sr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Visitation) and Lombardi lost 8-6 at first doubles, and first-years Mikayla Becich (Bradfordwoods, Pa./North Allegheny) and Grace Davis (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) dropped a 9-7 nail biter at the second slot.
Matches remained tight once action moved to singles. Doyle forced a first set tiebreaker before falling to Megan Tang, the top-ranked player in the central region, by scores of 7-6 (7-2) and 6-0.
Lombardi knocked off Linden Li by a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) score at the second spot, and Becich topped Helen Sdizkhov 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 at the fourth slot.
Claire Spencer (Fy./Newport News, Va./Menchville) tallied the Knights’ other triumph winning her three-set match 6-4, 1-6, 10-5. She paces Carleton with a 9-2 singles record this season.
The Knights will face Erskine College, a Division II program on Wednesday, March 27.
